Wine is a matter of taste, but where does that taste come from? Well it starts with the rocks and soils - that is, the earth beneath the vines. Clare Valley Rocks is a collaborative project initiated by the Clare Valley Grapegrowers and the Clare Valley Winemakers. It’s a working project that provides information about the rocks and the soil that are the earth beneath the Clare Valley’s grape vines. These rocks and soil, along with the vines, the climatic environment and seasonality, are all important factors that contribute to “gout de terroir” of a finished wine or the characteristic taste and flavour imparted to a wine by the environment in which it is produced.
